Description

Fascinating specimen of Calappa calappa, also known as the "Boxer Crab", carefully dried and preserved, originating from the tropical waters of the Philippines (Cebu). This crustacean, belonging to the Calappidae family, is famous for its domed and smooth carapace, reminiscent of a box or shield. The upper surface displays a pearly light tone with pinkish hues, while the robust front claws are folded under the carapace, ready to open in a defensive posture – hence the nickname “Boxer Crab”.
The ventral side of the specimen reveals the crab's detailed anatomy: articulated legs, complex mouthparts, and toothed claws that allow it to break shells and smaller crustaceans in nature. This specimen is ideal for natural history collections, Wunderkammer, educational exhibits, or as a visually striking decorative item.
Calappa calappa is a nocturnal crab that hides under the sand during the day. It can crush very hard shells with its specialized claws. Some crab species, including Calappa, exhibit a fascinating behavior called autotomy: they can shed a leg to escape a predator and regenerate it over time.
Each specimen is unique – an authentic fragment of the marine world, perfectly preserved for zoology enthusiasts, museums, and collectors of natural wonders.
