Description
This magnificent fossil specimen, measuring 120 mm, belongs to the legendary Otodus megalodon, the largest predatory shark ever to have existed. Living between the Early Miocene and the Late Pliocene (approximately 23 – 3.6 million years ago), the Megalodon ruled the oceans with an estimated length of up to 20 meters and a bite force greater than any other known animal, capable of crushing the bones of large cetaceans.
This tooth comes from marine sediments in North Carolina (USA). The enamel is glossy and well-structured, displaying beautiful tones ranging from deep black to chocolate brown, bordered by light beige edges and a massive root.
It features a V-shaped triangular structure, typical of lower anterior teeth, with sharp and slightly serrated edges.
The central dentin is visible, revealing internal growth structures.
The root is compact and excellently preserved, indicating stable fossilization in an anoxic environment.
The Megalodon belongs to the extinct family Otodontidae, a group of macropredatory sharks that evolved after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
It is estimated that it could swallow an entire whale in just a few bites, with a bite force between 100,000 and 180,000 N.
Its teeth were arranged in five functional rows, allowing the Megalodon to replace them quickly: a new one could grow every two weeks.
This tooth represents a high-quality authentic fossil, ideal for collectors, paleontologists, and enthusiasts of natural history. A piece that tells the story not only of shark evolution but also of the profound changes in the oceans during the Neogene.
