Crinoids: sea lilies.
Crinoids are commonly known as sea lilies, although they are animals, not plants. Crinoids are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and feather stars. Many features of crinoids are similar to other members of their phylum. Such features include tubular feet, radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and appendages in multiples of five (pentameral). Most Paleozoic crinoid species attached themselves to substrates on the ocean floor. Crinoids are renowned for their feather-like or tentacle-like appendages, which opened like a flower and captured food particles such as plankton. Although crinoids appeared in the Ordovician (488 million years ago), they survived the Permian mass extinction and diversified into hundreds of species that still survive today. The oldest known crinoids come from the Ordovician, which began about 488 million years ago. Approximately 625 species of crinoids still survive today. They are the descendants of crinoids that survived the mass extinction at the end of the Permian. It is estimated that over 6000 species of crinoids have lived on Earth.
