The process of pearl formation begins when a foreign body, such as a grain, penetrates the soft tissue of the mollusk. To protect itself from irritation, the mollusk starts secreting a layer of nacre around the foreign object, thus creating the pearl.
Today, most pearls come from farms, a process known as pearl farming, which allows for the production of high-quality pearls in a more controlled and predictable manner. In the pearl cultivation process, a nucleus, known as an irritant or inserter, is inserted into the soft tissue of the mollusk. This nucleus is composed of a small sphere of mother-of-pearl.
Once the nucleus has been inserted, the mollusk begins to react by producing a layer of nacre around the irritant. This nacre layer gradually accumulates over time, forming the pearl. The size and shape of the pearl depend on the species of mollusk, the size of the nucleus, and the cultivation time.
Cultivated pearls can belong to different categories, such as saltwater pearls (like Akoya pearls, Tahitian pearls, and South Sea pearls) and freshwater pearls (like river pearls). Each category has unique characteristics in terms of shape, color, and luster.
Pearl farming involves the use of mollusks, such as saltwater oysters (Pinctada oysters) and freshwater oysters, like Hyriopsis oysters.
Cultivating pearls has made high-quality pearls accessible to the jewelry market and has contributed to preserving the natural resources of marine habitats.
