The Seymchan is a testament to a collision that occurred billions of years ago, allowing us to touch a part of the birth of our solar system. The Seymchan meteorite, an extraordinary pallasite, is a celestial gem embodying the allure of a journey across deep space over billions of years. Discovered in 1967 near the Hekandue River in the Seymchan region of Russia, this pallasite is one of the few specimens that unites aesthetic beauty and scientific value. It is primarily composed of a matrix of iron-nickel, in which transparent or greenish olivine crystals, with occasional golden hues, are embedded, giving this stone a jewel-like appearance set in metal.
The structure of pallasites is unique among meteorites, as it represents a transitional stage between the metallic core and the silicate mantle of ancient differentiated asteroids. Pallasites come from fragments of planetesimal bodies formed in the early millions of years of our solar system when larger asteroids began to develop liquid metal cores. At these depths, the crystalline structures of olivine, a silicate mineral, formed within the solidified metal matrix. Seymchan's internal veins and iron-nickel lamellae create a natural reticulated effect, known as the Widmanstätten pattern, visible only in meteorites that cooled slowly over millions of years.
